Hiking
Cantwell Cliffs
The most challenging hike in Hocking Hills.
What is Cantwell Cliffs?
Cantwell Cliffs is about 45 min by car from Avenwood Cabins in New Straitsville, Ohio.
Cantwell Cliffs is the northernmost and least crowded of the major formations in Hocking Hills State Park. The trail drops into a deep gorge where narrow slot passages, including the famous Fat Man's Squeeze, wind between massive sandstone walls. Hidden waterfalls trickle down the cliff faces, and the forest here feels wilder and more remote than the busier southern trails.
The 1-mile loop is rated as the most difficult hike in the park, with steep stone staircases and uneven terrain that reward hikers with dramatic views at every turn. The gorge floor is cool and shaded, surrounded by hemlock and birch trees that have clung to the rock for centuries.
Because Cantwell Cliffs sits farther north than the other formations, it draws fewer visitors. On weekday mornings, you may have the entire gorge to yourself. For experienced hikers looking for a challenge beyond Old Man's Cave, this is the trail to seek out.
Tips for visiting Cantwell Cliffs
- 1 This is the most challenging trail in the park. Wear sturdy hiking boots with good ankle support.
- 2 Fat Man's Squeeze is tight. Leave bulky backpacks at the top before heading through.
- 3 Combine with a stop at Rock House, which is on the way back south.
- 4 Weekday mornings are the best time to visit. You'll likely have the trail to yourself.
